Hammer definitely falls behind a two handed sword because thralls love to use the useless kick with it. This reduces the DPS a lot since 2h swords have this overhead swing instead of a kick. A good alternative are one handed maces, the, seem to work great in thralls as well. As for leveling, gear and weapons make no difference.Once the NPC is knocked out, you will need to equip ropes. The easiest to get is a Fiber Binding. You can use this to tie to the NPC. From there, you need to manually drag them back to camp. This can be a dangerous process depending on how far you are to camp, and your Thrall can be killed during transport.

Named Bearer has 9.9k HP but hits less than the Purge fighters, however they ARE excellent to have when farming hide. Bezerker ftw. Steelin sparks !
