Dana 44 axles use a 1/2" wrench on the cover and Dana 60's use a 9/16" wrench, if I remember right. If the front axle is a solid (not IFS/TTB) axle and has kingpins, it is likely a Dana 60. If it has ball-joints, it could be either a 44 or 60.

I have a pair of Superduty Axles, I believe from an '06 F350, but I'm not sure. All I have are the codes on the axles themselves: REAR = V 445 H / 73 10 5 5E12. FRONT = 3 73 6C34-Aa / 20048824. On the rear, I believe V445H is the plant code, 73 indicates 3.73 (open) gearing, 10 5 indicates 10.5" ring gear, and 5E12 is the date code (not sure ...IIRC the only trucks that come with the 8.8 rear is the 3.5L N/A trucks.
