So if you wanted to, you could drill T1 dirt using T2 drills and still use a T1 harvester. This could be an intermediary before you start mining T2 at depth. The key feature here being that dirt that is placed takes on the properties of that grid square. The best way to find the Tier limit is to use a dull or sharp pickaxe T1 or T2 respectively.

I've probably put in 10 hours and I've gotten less then 8 kg of it, I've seen 1 nugget in the past 5 hours. Is there some trick to finding Cloutium now? I've got the Tier II shovel and I'm mining at the starting mining area.

First of all, if you're going to run ANY T2 Drills, you're going to want Cloutium Pipes. A Cloutium Intake Pipe exceeds the max water pressure for Iron Pipe and T1 Equipment.
