The "Best Horror of the Year" collections edited by Ellen Datlow are phenomenal, and there's a Best of the Best Of's as well. "Song For the Unraveling of the World" by Brian Evenson is a collection I adore, as are "Books of Blood" by Barker. H. P. Lovecraft is very good at dread-inducing existential horror, and I recommend you read that. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty - Probably the book that has come the closest to genuinely scaring me. The Shining and Salems Lot by Stephen King - my two favorites of his. The Shining is a great haunted house story and a great descent into madness which are my two favorite horror genres, fascinating story that never gets old.
