The gas is put into the tank opening on the right hand side and then seems to have to go through some sort of small channel to get to the lower side of the tank (left hand side). As far as a fuel gauge, there is no simple way to put one on a Shadow because of the design of the fuel tank. You can replace the petcock with a Pingel petcock.

If it is threaded in all you have to do is buy a petcock that will attach to the tank correctly. Or you could just put an inline on off valve. I like having a device to shut the fuel off.
