There is a shift clutch adjustment you can check, (search for service manual) but if that doesn't fix it you will need to crack the case to see what's going on in there. The hondamatics are not repairable, at least according to most mechanics, it might be possible to rebuild but would supposedly cost as much as a new one. For 3k I would definitely just have a new ride, and I will never buy anything with the hondamatic in it.

Rather than leave it for 8 hours, just reset it when needed. google the reset. It is key off, in neutral, press up and down at the same time, turn key and release up and down at the same time, when you hear angle sensor going through a cycle then press throttle open and release. Remove all the factory stiff, gummy grease that was put in the shift gears. Now, replace all that grease with a liberal amount of ALL-temperature, White Lithium Grease. Reassemble, and your shifting will be better. This works for all ES models except the Rincon.

So, here's how you replace that grease: Remove the shift motor and gears (all one piece) from the lower front of your engine. There are normally four 10mm bolts that hold it on. Once you have it loose and off, you will see that in the gears, there is some very thick, gummy, stiff grease.
