For the most part it's dangerous, but again, circumstances vary. I pretty much only play ToME for my roguelike these days, and I use a mix of autoexplore and shift+direction depending on the area. Unless you're trying to play a low turncount game, autoexplore is the best in DCSS with the exception of branch ends.
